The Fayetteville Shale is the oil and gas leader of the state of Arkansas. This geologic formation is composed of tight shale within the Arkoma basin from the Mississippian age (354-323 million years ago). While never becoming as high profile as other more prolific American shale plays, it has been a consistent producer and shares some similarities with the Barnett Shale located in Texas.
