Utica Shale

The Utica Shale largely underlies eastern Ohio with portions stretching into Pennsylvania and West Virginia. The stratigraphical unit of the Middle Ordovician age also reaches parts of Canada. It is a multi-product play in that it contains a mixture of dry natural gas, wet gas, and conventional liquid crude oil. In Quebec, the Utica Shale is a major source of tight gas.

In the last 5 years, more than 2,000 wells have been drilled into the modern Utica formation, while pipeline infrastructure struggles to catch up. It is a geographical neighbor to Pennsylvania’s Marcellus Shale.
